Arrests and Widespread Irregularities Reported The Hoima Post

Arrests, and Widespread Irregularities Reported » The Hoima Post –

Serious concerns have been raised over the conduct of Uganda’s election day amid reports of an internet shutdown, widespread electoral irregularities, arrests of opposition leaders, and disruptions at polling stations across the country.
Multiple opposition sources say internet access was switched off nationwide early on election day, limiting communication, observation, and the ability of citizens to share information in real time. Digital rights advocates argue that such shutdowns undermine transparency and restrict the public’s right to access information during a critical democratic process.
Reports from several regions indicate massive ballot stuffing allegedly taking place at numerous polling stations. Opposition parties claim their polling agents and supervisors were either abducted, arrested, or forcibly chased away, leaving voting centers without independent oversight.
Among those reportedly arrested is the Deputy President for the Western Region, further heightening tensions and fears of targeted crackdowns on opposition leadership. Families and party officials say they are struggling to trace the whereabouts of detained agents and supervisors.
Additional challenges have been reported with the Biometric Voter Verification Kits (BVVK), which are said to have failed at many polling stations. Observers warn that widespread technical failures can severely compromise the credibility of the vote, particularly when combined with the absence of agents and restricted media coverage.
Opposition voices and civil society groups are urging Ugandans and the international community to closely scrutinize the process and refuse to legitimize results arising from what they describe as a deeply flawed and intimidating environment. They are calling for accountability, independent investigations, and respect for constitutional rights.
As the situation continues to unfold, election observers, human rights organizations, and foreign missions are being urged to monitor developments closely and press for transparency, restraint, and adherence to democratic principles in Uganda.
