UN Human Rights Raises Alarm Over NGO Suspensions » The Hoima Post –

The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed serious concern over developments in Uganda ahead of the country’s elections, warning that recent restrictions threaten the integrity of the electoral process.
In a statement issued on January 14, UN Human Rights (@UNHumanRights) said that internet restrictions and the suspension of ten non-governmental organizations on the eve of elections are “deeply worrying.” The UN emphasized that open access to communication and information is essential for free, fair, and genuine elections.
“Open access to communication & information is key to free & genuine elections,” the statement read, underscoring the importance of transparency and civic participation during such a critical democratic moment.
The suspension of NGOs—many of which are involved in civic education, governance, and human rights work—has raised fears among civil society actors that independent observation and voter support efforts are being curtailed. At the same time, concerns over internet disruptions have reignited debate about digital rights, media freedom, and the ability of citizens to share information, report irregularities, and engage peacefully in the electoral process.
The UN further stressed that all Ugandans must be able to take part in shaping their future and the future of their country, a principle it says cannot be realized without respect for fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression, association, and access to information.
As election day approaches, local and international observers are closely watching developments, with growing calls for Ugandan authorities to lift restrictions, reinstate suspended organizations, and ensure an environment that allows citizens to participate freely and confidently in the democratic process.
