Uganda, IAEA Ink Nuclear Cooperation Framework for 2024-2029 – The Black Examiner

KAMPALA, (Examiner) – In a significant development, Hon. Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu, Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, alongside Hua Liu, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, inked Uganda’s Country Programme Framework (CPF) for the span of 2024-2029 on February 16, 2024. This CPF serves as the blueprint for the medium-term strategic planning of technical cooperation between Uganda and the IAEA, outlining priority sectors where the exchange of nuclear technology and cooperation resources will bolster national development objectives.

Since joining the IAEA fold in 1967, Uganda has upheld its membership commitment. The 2024-2029 CPF outlines seven pivotal areas of focus:

Nuclear and radiation safety

Food and agriculture

Human health

Water and environmental sustainability

Introduction of nuclear power

Uranium production

Feasibility studies on industrial applications including research reactor, industrial irradiator, and non-destructive testing.
