Uganda Parliamentary Press Association Condemns Attack on Journalists
The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA) and opposition leaders have today (Wednesday) joined the Greater Masaka Journalists Association in condemning the violent attack on media colleagues.
On Saturday, May 18, in Masaka-Lwengo district, journalists Zainab Namusaazi from NBS and Margaret Kayondo from Radio Simba, among others, allege to have been intentionally beaten by bodyguards of National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi.
The journalists were covering the burial of the late Pascal Ssekasamba at Manga village in Kiseka subcounty, Lwengo district.
“This shocking and brazen assault on journalists performing their duty to inform the public is unacceptable and creates fear and intimidation within our fraternity, especially as we approach a critical political period,” said Francis Lubega the leader of opposition UPPA.
Lately, the Electoral Commission has begun mapping and conducting civic education nationwide, according to Lubega, it is crucial that they use this opportunity report on these activities without fear of violence or harassment.
“We urge the authorities to take immediate action to stop aggression by personal bodyguards of politicians and security personnel, including the police, military, and army and we also call on the Association of Bouncers in Uganda to restrain their members (Kanyamas) and prevent further attacks on journalists, or we will seek legal action,” he further asserted.
Furious Lubega also demanded Immediate compensation for damages incurred by our colleagues, strict action against the individuals responsible for harming our colleagues and an apology from the culprits.
He later warned that If these demands are not met, they will be left by no choice but rather pursue legal action to ensure justice prevails.
“Additionally, we call on the Human Rights Network for Journalists to intervene and support our colleagues in this matter,” he requested.
