The national U19 girls cricket team, the Baby Victoria Pearls’ preparational series for the U19 World Cup Qualifiers got off to a good start following their victories against Tanzania.

The two sides- both preparing for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda- bowled off the bilateral series on Tuesday at Lugogo Cricket Oval, and the hosts proved a little stronger.

The hosts edged the first game by 9 runs, but were superior in the second one, winning it by 33 runs.

Despite their apparent superiority, Yusuf Nanga the head coach for the Ugandan side insisted “Every game we play here is a learning experience.”

He was nonetheless impressed by his team’s display saying; “We were good in all departments especially in the second game.”

Olila’s Asumin Akurut showed signs of brilliance with the bat. The teenager who already has a senior national team cap inspired her side to victory with commendable displays in both games.

Asumin scored 33 not out in the morning game and added 38* to her tally in the afternoon one. She also came out handy with the ball, picking two wickets in the afternoon. Irene Mutoni and Patricia Apolot each with three wickets gave their coaches a reason to applaud.

Both sides are using the series to fine-tune themselves ahead of the Qualifiers that will take place between next month in Kigali.

The two nations will be joined by 12 other nations in Kigali to fight for a place in next year’s U19 World Cup in Malaysia.

They will return to action on Wednesday with two more games lined up.
