The prayers were conducted shortly after Juma (Friday congregational) prayers at the Uganda National Mosque, a landmark place of worship whose construction was funded by the late Muammar Gaddafi.
The special supplications followed recitations from the Holy Qur’an led by Sheikh Murshid Muhammad Luwemba, Secretary for Da’wah at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), who received theological training in Libya.
Delivering the main sermon, UMSC Director of Sharia Sheikh Dr. Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga urged Muslims to prepare spiritually, mentally, and economically for the forthcoming Holy Month of Ramadan, which is expected to begin in the coming week, subject to the sighting of the moon.
He called on the faithful to strengthen their observance of obligatory daily prayers and increase voluntary night prayers, extend charity to the needy, and dedicate more time to recitation of the Holy Qur’an. He emphasised that Ramadan presents a period of immense spiritual reward and renewal for believers.
Friday, February 13, 2026, marked the last Friday of Sha’ban, the Islamic lunar month that precedes Ramadan.
Among those in attendance were UMSC Secretary General Hon. Haji Abbas Muluubya Ssekyanzi, departmental heads, Badru Kiggundu, former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Uganda, and Muslim leaders from across the country.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi was reportedly killed last week. Further details regarding the circumstances of his death have not yet been officially confirmed.
