UN condemns US political leaders over racist hate speech

The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination says racist hate speech by United States political leaders, including President Donald Trump, has sparked human rights violations in the country.
The Committee is made up of independent experts that monitor implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by its States parties, which include the United States.
In a statement, the Geneva-based body said certain speech, including derogatory and dehumanising language combined with immigration crackdowns and racial profiling had sparked violations.
A White House Spokesperson told AP that the UN assessment was just as “useless as their broken escalator, that no one took them seriously or cared what they thought and that Americans were living in a safer, stronger country than ever before.”
The Committee said it was deeply disturbed by the growing use of derogatory language, and the dissemination of negative and harmful stereotypes targeting migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, often as criminals.
The body warned that this rhetoric at the highest levels, including from the President, could incite racial discrimination and hate crimes.
The Committee made several recommendations to the US among them a review whether its immigration enforcement policies, including use of force, aligned with International Human Rights Law.
