The UN General Assembly in New York will on Wednesday consider a draft resolution that would unequivocally condemn the trafficking of enslaved Africans and the transatlantic slave trade as the most inhumane and enduring injustice against humanity.
The transatlantic slave trade was a crime against humanity that struck at the core of personhood, broke up families & devastated communities.
Let us reject the false narrative of racial difference & fully commit to human rights, equality & the inherent worth of every person. pic.twitter.com/ru40H950bx

The draft text, seen by SABC NEWS, also seeks to recognise the profound and lasting impacts of slavery and colonialism.
The initiative is spearheaded by Ghana and the African Group that earlier explained the draft resolution was the result of a clear continental mandate taken at the highest levels of the African Union.
For over 400 years, more than 15 million Africans were victims of the transatlantic slave trade, described as one of the darkest chapters in human history.
The proposed passage of the text today would be on the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which offers the opportunity to honour those who suffered and died at the hands of a brutal slavery system.
Ghana’s President John Mahama said it sought to move the international community from acknowledgement to action: from recognition of historical injustice to a structured dialogue on repair.
