Unisa welcomes court interdict against former Registrar Mothata

The University of South Africa (Unisa) believes persistent attacks by one of its senior officials, which tainted the image of the institution, will now come to an end.
This week, the High Court in Pretoria interdicted the institution’s former Registrar, Professor Steward Mothata, from continuing with actions and communications that target the university.
This follows Unisa’s application to the court, alleging that Mothata continuously harassed and undermined the institution, its leadership and governance structures.
He was also ordered to apologise to the institution and its leadership.
“He also has to comply with certain terms of the order, which would be to apologise to the university and to retract. But at the same time, a rule nisi was given. Rule nisi is simply means that there’s a return date on the 25th of May, wherein the respondent would have to come and convince the judge as to why the order should not be a final order, meaning why he should he not be interdicted permanently. In short, that is with regard to that and the other issues, I think most of the media houses have information,” says Unisa’s spokesperson on legal matters, Advocate Oupa Mabusela.
