The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) holds a meeting at UN headquarters in New York City, United States (US) on October 16, 2024.

UNSC condemns RSF’s assault in Sudan

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has condemned Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and what it described as the group’s continued assault and destabilisation in the Kordofan region of the country.
The UNSC expressed deep concern over continued violence across the north African country, including Darfur and called on the parties to the conflict to immediately halt the fighting through a negotiated ceasefire.
In a press statement, the council strongly condemned reports of repeated drone attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, humanitarian personnel and their assets.
Its condemnation comes days after an Independent UN Fact Finding Mission determined acts of genocide had been committed by the RSF in Sudan amid widespread human rights violations by all parties to the conflict including the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF).
The council condemned all forms of violations and abuses committed against the civilian population including ethnically motivated targeting and cautioned against starvation being used as a weapon of war.
UNSC members also called for all perpetrators of abuses and violations to be held accountable, reiterating that the priority was for the parties to advance talks leading to a comprehensive, inclusive and Sudanese-owned political process.
