Preview: URA Start Life Without King David
URA will embark on a new journey post David Obua’s departure as they face NEC FC in their first match hosting at Kabaka Kyabaggu Stadium, Wakissha.
The club’s decision to terminate Obua’s one-year contract, just five months into his tenure, on Friday, April 12, 2024, was shocking but came amidst a disappointing run of three consecutive losses.
During his stint with URA FC, starting in November 2023, Obua oversaw 20 matches across various competitions, securing eight wins, four draws, and eight losses.
Robert Mukasa steps in as the caretaker coach for the remainder of the season, supported by Ilic Milosh, Allan Owiny, Robert Ssentongo, and Goalkeeping Coach Swaibu Ssebagala.
URA FC faces an uphill battle, trailing their opponent NEC by nine points, with NEC making their debut in the top flight this season.
Despite their newcomer status, NEC sits fifth with 40 points, still in contention for the title as a victory against URA could bring them within a point of league leaders Kitara, who take on Vipers on Friday.
NEC has enjoyed a remarkable campaign, progressing to their first Uganda Cup semifinals after eliminating Police at Kavumba last week.
While their last league game resulted in a 1-0 win over leaders Kitara, it’s worth noting that their previous defeat occurred at this venue, Wakissha, in a 1-0 loss against Wakiso Giants.
But they will be confident of their chances against URA having beaten the side 2-0 at Lugogo in the first round fixture.
