The United States of America Trade Representative‘s office announced this week it is investigating 60 of its major trading partners.
The probe will determine if these nations are doing enough to block products made with forced labour from entering US market.
The announcement has raised the prospect of new tariffs or trade restrictions on the targeted countries.
In a statement, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says nations found in violation could face penalties under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act.
South Africa is among the countries being reviewed as part of the inquiry including the European Union, China, Japan, Canada, Mexico, India, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
The process for now will include consultations with affected nations and a public hearing scheduled for April this year before any trade remedies are finalized.
The inquiry is expected to focus on sectors including textiles and apparel, agriculture, mining and critical minerals, and some manufactured goods.
