Gombe Secondary School and Kawanda Secondary School made strong statements on Day One of the 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Elite Games, delivering commanding performances in the handball competition at Janan Secondary School Bombo.
Kawanda SS boys set the early pace with a dramatic 30-29 victory over Bombo Army in a nail-biting encounter. The closely contested match saw Kawanda edge their opponents by a single goal to mark a memorable start to their campaign.
Gombe SS later underlined their strength, cruising to a dominant 39-19 win against Bombo Army in the boys’ category to wrap up the day in an emphatic fashion.
In the girls’ competition, Gombe proved unstoppable. They opened with a resounding 46-12 victory over Bombo Army before returning to the court to dismantle Maryhill 35-12, registering two comprehensive wins to take early control of the standings.
Action resumes on Day Two with crucial fixtures lined up. In the boys’ category, Kawanda SS will face Gombe SS in the morning before taking on Bombo Army in the afternoon.
In the girls’ division, Maryhill will battle Bombo Army before Gombe SS returns to the court against Bombo Army later in the day.
The Elite Games, which kicked off on Friday, 27th February, will climax on Sunday, 1st March. Schools are competing in six disciplines: basketball, rugby 7s, football, netball, volleyball and handball.
