Mbarara — Drama, deception, and political intrigue have landed smack in the middle of the Mbarara Woman MP race! Rival candidate Maurishia Hope has officially petitioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to recall the nomination of Loydah Twinomujuni Kyarikunda, claiming she submitted a forged academic document — a claim allegedly confirmed by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
According to a petition filed by Kyamanywa & Co. Advocates on behalf of Hope, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has confirmed that a document (equivalent of UACE certificate) presented by Kyarikunda is fake. The letter, dated 6 November 2025 and signed by NCHE Executive Director Prof. Mary Okwakol, dismissed the document attributed to NCHE as a forgery.
“Please note that the letter dated 12th October 2021 you submitted attributing it to the National Council for Higher Education is a forgery. Tendering a false or forged document is a crime under Ugandan law,” Prof. Okwakol stated.
The petitioners argue that Kyarikunda’s nomination contravenes Article 80(1)(c) of the Constitution, Section 4(1)(c) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, and other regulations requiring candidates to possess a valid Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) or its equivalent.
In their letter to EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, the lawyers demanded that the commission nullify Kyarikunda’s nomination and bar her from contesting in the 2026-2031 general elections.
“Having confirmed that Mrs. Twinomujuni Kyarikunda Loydah does not possess a valid certificate from the National Council for Higher Education, the Commission should recall and nullify her nomination,” the petition reads.
The petitioners also requested an extension of time for the EC to consider their petition, noting that they only confirmed the alleged forgery after receiving responses from the relevant institutions.
The allegations have shaken political circles, but the story gets even juicier — Kyarikunda is the wife of Eng. John Vianney Twinomujuni, a commissioner at the Ministry of Water whose recent contract extension triggered public uproar and court showdown. Insider whispers suggest some party heavyweights are already questioning whether Kyarikunda’s political ambitions are tied to her husband’s influence.
But gossip on the ground paints an even messier picture: some say Kyarikunda was last week spotted frantically meeting campaign aides, trying to calm nerves and control the narrative before the scandal became public. Political insiders claim that her camp is worried the EC might act fast, leaving her little room to maneuver.
Supporters of both candidates are reportedly on edge, monitoring the EC for updates, while social media is already exploding with memes and hot takes on the “Fake Certificate Saga.”
Many are asking: Will the EC take decisive action, or will political influence shield Kyarikunda?
If the commission rules against her, Kyarikunda who has already heavily invested in the Woman MP bid faces humiliation, disqualification, and a bruised political career, while her rivals, including Hope, and incumbent Margret Rwebyambu could swoop in and capitalize on the scandal.
Meanwhile, the Twinomujuni couple’s high-profile status keeps the story sizzling, with some insiders hinting that this scandal could have ripple effects at the Ministry of Water.
For now, the EC remains tight-lipped, leaving Mbarara buzzing with whispers, speculation, and political intrigue.
