FOUL PLAY? Workers MP Hopeful Abima Stephen Sudden Death Shock Voters

Uganda’s labour movement has been thrown into mourning, confusion and outright suspicion after the sudden death of Workers’ MP aspirant Abima Stephen, barely days after his high-energy nomination at the Electoral Commission.
Abima, a towering figure in Uganda’s trade union circles, reportedly passed away today -Friday, 12 December 2025, sending shockwaves through the workers’ fraternity. His death comes after he confidently declared a new dawn for Uganda’s workers and vowed to “revitalize union power” if elected to Parliament.
Now, whispers of foul play are growing louder in the corridors of labour unions.

He has been described as energetic, composed and excited about the Workers MP race. His megaphone symbol—“THE TAP ROOT”—had already become a rallying call for thousands across the country.
WHO BENEFITS FROM HIS EXIT?
With 17 candidates battling for only five parliamentary seats reserved for workers, Abima was seen as one of the strongest contenders, bolstered by his experience as: General Secretary of ATGWU, Deputy Secretary General of NOTU, and Executive Board Member of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF).

“With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Bro. Abima Stephen on Friday, 12 December 2025.Bro. Abima, a devoted trade Unionist, was the Executive Board Member of International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), Deputy Secretary General of National Organization of Trade Unions (NOTU) and General Secretary of Amalgamated Transport and General Workers’ Union (ATGWU) and aspiring Workers’ Member of Parliament, whose impact will never be forgotten. He lived a life full of kindness, strength, peace and love. The details on the burial arrangements will be communicated in due course,” reads a statement from AMALGAMATED TRANSPORT AND GENERAL WORKERS’ UNION (ATGWU).
“Your mark on Employee/employer relations will remain for generations! Always objective and cool headed! We hoped you would be a great asset in Parliament but God invited you to his own! Rest in Peace,” eulogised one of his friends.
“He was unstoppable,” said a colleague from NOTU. “If there is foul play, then someone feared his influence.”

As condolences pour in from across the labour movement, fear is spreading among workers who wonder if this tragedy signals a darker undercurrent in the upcoming elections.
“We have lost a champion,” said a female union representative, wiping tears. “But we also demand the truth. Workers must not die for wanting to serve.”
Burial arrangements will be communicated later, but for now, Uganda’s workers are united in grief—and burning questions.
