Uganda and East Africa’s secondary school sports powerhouse, St Mary’s Boarding Secondary School, Kitende, has appointed Marion Atwegyeise as its new Head of Sports, marking a historic milestone in school sports administration.
Atwegyeise will serve as the school’s Sports Tutor, a newly created position that makes St Mary’s Kitende the first secondary school in Uganda to introduce a dedicated sports tutor role—a move expected to further professionalize school sports management.
Marion joins Kitende from Buddo Secondary School, where she worked in the sports department between 2017 and 2024, serving as patron for Basketball and Netball.
During her tenure at Buddo, she established herself as one of the most successful sports administrators at school level, overseeing a period of sustained excellence at district, national and regional competitions.
Her achievements at Buddo include multiple FEASSA Basketball gold medals, winning:
Girls’ titles in 2017 and 2018
Boys’ titles in 2019, 2022 and 2023
At national level, Atwegyeise guided Buddo to National Schools Basketball Championship gold medals in 2019 (boys) and 2022 (boys). She also delivered success in basketball 3×3, securing Africa Schools Championship gold for girls in 2023, alongside national 3×3 boys’ titles in 2022 and 2023, as well as the 2023 FEASSA 3×3 boys’ championship.
In netball, her record includes district-level dominance, winning gold at:
Novice Games (2019)
Buganda Cup (2019)
Wakiso District Championships (2019)
At St Mary’s Kitende, Atwegyeise will oversee the entire sports ecosystem, with responsibilities that include providing technical support to all sports programmes, coordinating internal and external competitions, and managing sports equipment and finances.
Her role will also focus on building a professional sports culture rooted in respect, empathy, teamwork and discipline, while ensuring a safe, inclusive environment for all student-athletes. She will further be tasked with tracking athlete performance and records, managing athlete and staff conduct, and strengthening the school’s sports community.
The appointment underscores St Mary’s Kitende’s continued commitment to innovation and excellence, as the school seeks to maintain its dominance while setting new standards in secondary school sports development across the region.
