NAGRC&DB Wraps Up Workshop on Preventive Livestock Healthcare, Trains Vets to Boost Farm Productivity

The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has concluded Workshop a three days of its ongoing training programme, “Growing Your Business Through Preventive Livestock Healthcare,” held at Rubona Stock Farm in Bunyangabu District.
The programme, conducted in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Bukalasa Agricultural College, aims to strengthen the capacity of Veterinary Paraprofessionals (VPPs) to deliver modern, preventive livestock healthcare while improving the sustainability of their veterinary businesses.
According to NAGRC&DB, the workshop marked a major step in equipping field-based veterinary workers with hands-on skills essential for disease prevention, early detection, and community engagement.
During Workshop, participants were trained to apply financial management tools introduced earlier in the online sessions to enhance business growth.
They also learned to identify the core components of a practical business plan and develop herd and flock health plans focused on preventing infectious diseases rather than responding to outbreaks.
Trainers further emphasized the importance of effective, gender-responsive communication to ensure livestock farmers understand and adopt preventive health practices.
Officials from NAGRC&DB noted that the initiative forms part of a wider national push to improve the quality, reach, and long-term sustainability of livestock healthcare services across Uganda—an effort expected to translate into healthier herds, higher farm productivity, and more resilient veterinary enterprises.
