The Uganda Women’s U-20 national team, the Queen Cranes, are one step away from history after booking a place in the final round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Uganda secured their spot following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia on February 14 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, sealing a 2-1 aggregate triumph in the third qualification round. The decisive moment came just seven minutes into the match when Mary Kantono found the back of the net, a goal that ultimately propelled the Queen Cranes into the final hurdle.
The result marked a statement performance from the East Africans, who displayed tactical discipline and resilience away from home. Head coach Sheryl Botes made one notable change to her starting lineup, introducing Imelda Kasemire in place of Kuluthum Namutebi. The adjustment proved crucial as Uganda maintained control and composure throughout the 90 minutes to protect their slender advantage.
Speaking after the match, Botes praised her players and dedicated the victory to the nation.

“I must thank my players, they were amazing today. This victory is for the people of Uganda who have truly backed the team. I also appreciate President Moses Magogo for his continued support and love for women’s football. It is a very good win for us,” she said.
Uganda now face a stern test against West African giants Ghana in the fourth and final qualification round. Ghana advanced after edging South Africa 3-2 on aggregate, setting up a decisive two-legged tie against the Queen Cranes. The winner over the two matches will earn Africa’s coveted slot at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.
With qualification within touching distance, the Queen Cranes will look to carry their momentum into May 2026 when the final round kicks off. For Uganda, the dream of competing on the global stage is alive — and now just two matches away from becoming reality.
