Bugiri was thrown into chaos and tears on Wednesday morning after a devastating crash claimed at least ten lives in a split second, leaving scores of others battling for survival. The grisly accident happened in Busowa Town Council, just metres from Busowa Police Station, as dawn was breaking.
The ill-fated Toyota Hiace taxi (UBN 817H), travelling from Tororo to Kampala, reportedly hurtled down the road at high speed before veering off course and ramming straight into a stationary trailer (UA 647BA) that had been parked by the roadside. The impact was so violent that bodies were strewn inside the mangled wreckage as horrified residents rushed to the scene.
Busowa Town Council Mayor Naminya Badiru described the crash as one of the worst in recent memory, calling the sight “terrible and heartbreaking.” He revealed that initial findings point to reckless driving and speeding, with the taxi driver losing control moments before slamming into the trailer’s rear.
Busoga East Police spokesperson ASP Michael Kasadha later confirmed the tragedy, revealing that ten people died instantly, while three survivors—all in critical condition—were rushed to Bugiri General Hospital for emergency treatment.
“The accident happened at around 6am. The taxi driver lost control and knocked a parked trailer. Ten died on the spot and three are receiving medical care,” Kasadha said, warning motorists to exercise maximum caution—especially as the festive season ushers in a spike in deadly crashes.
As families scramble to identify loved ones and Bugiri mourns yet another senseless road tragedy, authorities are once again pleading with road users to slow down, stay alert, and stop turning highways into death traps.
