The Uganda Cubs have etched their names in football history after qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup knockout stages for the first time, following a thrilling 1–0 victory over France on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar.
Playing in their maiden World Cup appearance, Brian Ssenyondo’s young charges entered the decisive group match knowing that only a win would keep their campaign alive — and they delivered with poise, determination, and tactical discipline.
Uganda’s breakthrough came in the 18th minute, when captain Hamza Ssengooba produced a clever cut-back to find striker James Bogere, who calmly slotted home from close range. The move was initiated by Elvis Torach, whose blistering run down the right flank and precise delivery set up the historic goal that silenced the French defense.
From then on, the Cubs displayed remarkable composure and organization, weathering waves of French attacks through a mix of defensive resilience and intelligent game management. Goalkeeper Paul Olinga made crucial saves as Uganda held firm to preserve their slender lead until the final whistle.
The victory secured Uganda a third-place finish in Group K with four points, level with France and Canada but behind on goal difference. Despite being debutants, the Cubs outperformed expectations to reach the last 32, a feat that marks a new era for Ugandan youth football.
Uganda’s journey in Qatar has been nothing short of inspirational — starting with a narrow 2–1 loss to Canada,to a one all draw against Chile before the memorable triumph over European giants France.
Coach Ssenyondo lauded his players’ fighting spirit and discipline after the game, describing the performance as a testament to Uganda’s growing footballing maturity.

“These boys have shown character and heart. Beating France at this stage is special, but more importantly, it shows that Uganda can compete at the highest level,” said Ssenyondo.

As the Cubs advance to the knockout stage, they carry not just their dreams but the pride and hope of a football-loving nation eager to see its next generation of stars continue their historic run on the world stage.
