On Friday, the Cricket Cranes will be expected to have touched base in the Caribbean after they were flagged off on Tuesday ahead of their maiden appearance at the ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup due June 1-29
At the ceremony held at Copper Chimney in Lugogo, Hon. Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang headlined the dignitaries including the National Council of Sports (NCS) General Secretary Bernard Patrick Ogwel, and Uganda Cricket Association Chairman, Micheal Nuwagaba among others who graced the function.
The Cricket Cranes have since confirming their qualification in November last year been on a move in a bid to get themselves well prepared both mentally and physically as well as polish their skill, but now is the time to focus fully on the tournament proper.
India and Sri Lanka are the two countries the Cricket Cranes toured in their preparations, but the attention now shifts to this tournament’s co-hosts, the West Indies which will be the official base for Uganda for the entirety of the competition.
To get the mood tantalizing for the debutants, Uganda will face both Namibia and Scotland in their warm up games. The side coached by Abhay Sharma will play against Namibia on Tuesday next week before meeting the European side on Thursday. Both games will be hosted at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago.
After their warm up games, the Cricket Cranes will then line up against Afghanistan on 4th June at the Providence Stadium, Guyana in their opening game at World Cup.
Games against Papau New Guinea on 6th June, West Indies on 9th will then follow before their final group game on 15th which will be against New Zealand.
The Cricket Cranes head to this tournament is complete underdogs and an unknown team, but they will be looking to play their hearts out and leave a lasting impression at this showpiece.
