Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba says the growing demand for water in the Polokwane Municipality has put severe pressure on its water supply.
Ramathuba was speaking at a media briefing on water provision in Polokwane.
Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation David Mahlobo and officials from Lepelle Northern Water also attended the briefing.
Ramathuba explains the water needs of the municipality.
“The entire municipality requires a staggering 174 million litres per day, yet our current sources, which are not even coming from the city, can only yield 118.15 million litres, leaving us with significant shortfall. In the urban area, where the demand is 99.7 million litres per day, we are failing to meet those needs with available supply and falling short by nearly 13 million litres per day.”
Meanwhile, Ramathuba has called for cooperation between the municipality and Lepelle Northern Water to ensure reliable water supply for residents.
“Our public services are not equipped to meet our growing needs. Since 1994, the growth of our city has been nothing short of phenomenal, yet this expansion has placed an increasing burden on our infrastructure, including vital services such as water provision. We face challenges in maintaining consistent water supply. This situation calls for urgent action, urgent cooperation, and also transparency in addressing this matter.”
