Weekend fires in Cape Peninsula leaves 700 people destitute

Two informal settlement fires this weekend in the Cape Peninsula have left about 700 people destitute.
The homes of about 500 residents at Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay and 200 at Masiphumelele in Fish Hoek were razed in the fires.
Masiphumelele resident Philisa Mchithwa, elaborates on their plight: “My problem with these fires is that we have too many illegal connections because of our government. We have many fires here. Three weeks ago, we had a fire in the same area. People are still picking up the pieces and government has not done anything to help the homeless.”
