The 2024/25 FUFA Big League season is set to kick off with a highly anticipated West Nile Derby between Onduparaka FC and Paidha Black Angels on Sunday, October 6, per the draft fixtures seen by this website.
This match, alongside five other fixtures, will mark the beginning of the campaign for teams vying for promotion to the Uganda Premier League.
Onduparaka narrowly missed out on promotion last season, finishing fourth with 44 points, just five points shy of the coveted promotion places that were secured by Mbale Heroes, Lugazi FC, and Police FC.
The Caterpillars will be looking to start strong in their bid to return to the top flight, and that will be against their eternal enemies.
Paidha Black Angels, on the other hand, are making a return to the FUFA Big League after three seasons in the Regional Leagues.
Their promotion was secured after overcoming Northern Gateway in a tense two-legged playoff.
The last time Paidha featured in the league was in June 2021 when they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Arua Hill, though their relegation had been confirmed earlier that season.
Adding extra spice to the fixture, Arua Hill, another West Nile side, will also compete in the FUFA Big League this season after being relegated from the Uganda Premier League due to licensing issues midway the campaign.
The rivalry between Onduparaka and Paidha Black Angels has always been intense, whether at Onduparaka’s Greenlight Stadium or Paidha’s Bar Okoro Stadium.
Their last encounter, in April 2019, ended in a 1-1 draw at Bar Okoro, and fans will be eager to see how both teams fare this time around.
In addition, relegated UPL sides Busoga United and Gaddafi will begin their quest for a swift return to the top tier with away matches against Kataka FC and Kaaro Karungi respectively.
Booma and new entrants Buhimba United Saints will not be in action until Match-week two.
