Masindi youth have attributed high rise on abortion and use of contraceptive pills in the district and country at large on parents who are arrogant.
The youth were speaking during an activity on reproductive health justice forum organised by Alpha action for social and economic development (AASED) held at Bikonzi sub county headquarters in Masindi district on Tuesday November, 18, 2025.
The forum brought health personnel and legal to sensitize the communities on reproductive health and also create awareness on laws that govern its health justice in Uganda.
Catherine Babirye, a youth from Bikonzi sub county noted that Abortion is not good act since it has claimed many lives of youth and even adults.
She however blames it on arrogant parents who don’t want to listen to their children regardless saying in due process and fear, some resolve to aborting, join family planning or use pills to prevent pregnancy something which she says is bad and needs collective effort to overcome it.
Gerard Andabati another youth said that most boys fear responsibility which has contributed a lot on abortion and use of dangerous contraceptives.
Gilbert Alinaitwe nursing officer at Masindi general hospital who was the main facilitator on reproductive health justice forum during the activity, advised the youth that instead of using contraceptives and abortion, they are supposed to call health experts to teach them on different family planning methods, post abortion package adding decision is always according to the individual clients.
Alinaitwe however attributes increased level of immorality to spending much time on social media and TV’s which expose them to things which they could not have learnt before. He encouraged the youth to embrace abstinence as one of the safest measures of preventing STD’S, use condoms or delay sexual intercourse. He revealed that in Bujenje constituency, the teenage pregnancy is on the rise and numbers are growing the reason as to why they have come up with program of visiting different communities because it is collective responsibility.
Morris Ogeny executive director AASED says the reason for organising the activity is to empower the communities to know their rights, access services and be supported because most people in the communities fear coming to health centers amidst complications they encounter and issues adding that others have stigma and others think they are discriminated.
Alongside reproductive health justice, they also had integrated services where health workers screened cancer on 10 years Girls and above, HIV AIDS testing, hepatitis B, deworming from 6 months and above testing of sickle cells and blood pressure free of charge.
