11 Kigogwa Fire Victims Handed to Family

The Uganda Police Force has today handed over 11 bodies of victims from the Kigogwa fire accident to their families at Mulago City Mortuary.

The Right. Hon Prime Minister was represented by the Hon Minister of State For National Guidance Hon. Kabbyanga Baluku at the Handover ceremony.

Assistant Inspector General of Police Dr. Moses Byaruhanga gave a technical report of how the whole process was handled noting that a total of 24 bodies, males (18) and females (6) have so far been handled which includes those died at Kigogwa, Kiruddu and Bombo Hospitals.

Due to severe burns, the bodies were unrecognizable therefore had to be identified through a DNA process.

This tragedy happened early this week in Kigogwa Town along Kampala Bombo road when a fuel tanker overturned and caught fire, claiming the lives of 11 people, including 9 adults and 2 minors. The victims were burnt beyond recognition.

The fuel tanker, with registration number UAM 292Q, was traveling from Kampala to Gulu when the accident occurred. Unfortunately, people who rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker were the most affected.- Four buildings housing nine shops were destroyed in the blaze.

Properties worth millions of shillings were lost. The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.- Police are conducting a fact-finding mission to confirm the number of injured persons from the health facilities. The identities of those affected have not yet been established.
