Served as the first president of Zambia from 1964 to 1991 he was he was at the Forefront of the struggle for independence from British rule Harry in leadership of the northern R rhasia African National Congress he broke away and founded the Zambian African National Congress later becoming the head of the Socialist

United United Nation Independent party unip kaunda was the first president of Independent Zambia in 1973 following the tribal and interp party violence all political parties except unip were banned through the amendment of The the national Constitution after the signing of the chaa Declaration at the same time kunda

Over saw the acquisition of the majority stakes in the key foreign owned companies the 1973 oil crisis and the clamp in export Revenue put Zambia in a state of economic crisis International pressure toaa changed the rule that had kept him in power uh for multiparty election which took place in 199 one in

Which Patrick chiluba the leader of the movement of the multi party uh democracy outed kaunda some of the few details I’m giving you about kaunda as as I passed through all as I visited Zambia I got more information from kaunda and other you know other other presidents of Zambia uh

We along uh the reign of kaunda he had Ruben kamanga Simon cap manise K as one of the vice presidents that he ruled with he was succeeded by Frederick chiluba uh the third of the non allied movement who sat in office in 1970 to 1973 talking about Kenneth kaunda his

Early life he was born as I told you at Luba mission in in chinali then part of the northern rhasia now Zambia and was the youngest of the eight children his father Reverend David kaunda was an ordinate ordinated Church um ordained uh was an ordained Church of Scotland missionary and teacher he has

Been born who was who had been born in neeland now Malawi he moved to chisla to work at Luba Mission his mother was also um a teacher and was the first African woman to teach in the colonial Northern RH Asia they were both teachers uh at the chamber ethnic they

Were both uh teachers among the bber ethnic group which is now located in Northern Zambia his father died when K Kenneth was ah a child he this is where kund received um his education until 1940s he later on followed his father’s or his parents footsteps and became a

Teacher but then in the middle of 1940 he moved to tanganika territory now part of Tanzania he worked in the southern rhasia he attended monali training center in laka uh between 1941 to 1943 early in his career um he read the writings of mahtim m Gandhi that he said

Went straight to his heart so we’re talking about KK Kenneth Ka uh Zambia’s first president uh who ruled the country for you know I don’t know very many years um Kenneth kunda was a teacher at the upper um upper primary school and boarding Master at Luba then the head master of Luba

From 1943 to 1945 for a time he worked at the salary and budra M in the early 1948 he became a teacher in muuli muula for the United Nations uh United missions to the ca he then uh became an assistant at the an African welfare Center boarding

Master of a m School in M Fila in this period he was a leading pathf fight Scout we go direct to uh the struggle of Independence in Zambia in 1949 Kenneth kaunda old kaunda entered politics and he became the Founding Father of the northern relian African National Congress on 11th November

1953 he moved to toosaka uh to take up the post of Secretary General of the N African National Congress NC under the presidency of Harry kubula he combined efforts of kaunda and kubula the combined efforts of Ka and Kula failed to mobilize native African against the European dominated Federation of rhasia andand in

1955 kaunda and Kula were imprisoned for 2 months with hard labor for disturbing uh Lit Literature the two leaders drifted apart as Koba became increasingly influenced by the white liberos and failing to defend the indigenous Africans was in prison muona and other nationalists broke away from thec and in 1958 Chona

Became the first president of the national independent party the successor to zanak however Chona did not see himself as a party main founder when kaunda was released from prison in 19 uh January 1960 he was elected president of the UN unip in 1960 he visited Martin Luther

King in Atlanta and afterwards in July 1961 kund organized a civil disobedience campaign in Northern Province the so-call Cha Cha Cha Campaign which consisted largely of Anson obstruct obstructing significant roads kaunda subsequently r as the unip candidate during the 1960 election which resulted in U unip and coalition

Government with K as minister of local government and social welfare in January 1964 unip won the next major election defeating their uh Rivals securing C’s position as prime minister on 2020 uh on 24th October 1964 he became the first president of the independent Zambia appointing Ruben kamanga as his vice

President so talking about kaand uh those are some of the few details that I could get and uh maybe talk about him and his struggle for the Zambian Independence uh talking about his educational policies talking about his he had very many policies the economic policies and um the one party State uh

Talking about the African socialism foreign policies all those uh you know Asar in kers rule so let’s go deep in how he fell from Grace matters quickly uh came ahead in 1990 in July I made 3 days of rioting in the capital K announced a referendum on whether to legalize other parties who

Who he held who which were held in October however urged to maintain the UN niip Monopoly claiming that a multiparty system could lead to chaos the announcement also came too late hours late as and disr officer went on radio to announce Ka had been overthrown the Cooper attempt was broken

3 to 4 hours later but it was clear k and the U un were railing K tried to mod modify the opposition by moving the referendum to August 1991 the opposition claimed that the original de did not allow enough time for voter registration well expressing willingness

To have the Zambian people vote on a multi-party system kunda maintained that only a one party State could prevent tribalism violence from engulfing the country by September he uh however opposition by September the opposition demanded for all for to reverse the C he cancelled the referendum and instead recommended Constitutional Amendments

That could dismantle un’s Monopoly on power he announced a snap general election for the following year two years before it was due he signed unnecessary amendments in law in December after these elections the movement for multiparty democracy AMD hmed by the trade Union uh leader Fredick chiluba swept unip from power in

A landslide and in the presidential election kunda was redly defeated taking only 24% of the vote to chuba’s 75% the U was cut down to only 25 seats in the National Assembly one of the issues in the campaign was a plan by kaunda to turn over a one qut of the

Nation land to Marisha Maha an Indian Guru who promised that he would use it for a network of Utopia agriculture to Enclave that a pro prominence that he would create Heaven on Earth K was forced in a television interview to deny practicing trans Dental meditation while

K anded power to kiliba on 2nd November 1999 he became the second Mainland African head of state to allow a free party election and to releash power peacefully and after he had lost then first uh after he had lost anyway um the post presidential um since I went to the I

Was at the grave you know there are more things that we have to talk about the post presidential uh life of kaunda his personal life and other things after leaving office Kaa clashed frequently with chuba’s government and the AMD chiluba later attempted to deport Kaa on the grounds that he was a

Malawian the AMD dominated government under the leadership of chiluba had the Constitution amended baring citizen with foreign pass parentage from Stand from standing for presidency to prevent kunda from contesting the next election in 1996 in which he planned to participate after the 1997 Cooper attempt on boxing day in 197 1997 he was

Arrested by parliamentary policemen however many officials in the region appealed against this on the New Year Eve the same year he was placed under house arrest until his court date in 1999 kunda was declared stateless by the n nland high court in a judgment delivered by CH the Justice chalindo sakala kunda however

Successfully challenged this decision in the Supreme Court of Zambia which declared him to be a Zambian citizen in the Lua and others versus kiluba ruling on 4th June 1994 uh kaunda announced that he was resigning as the United National independence party leader and retiring from politics after retiring in

200 2000 he was involved in various charitable organ organizations his most notable contribution was his Zeal in the fight against the spread of HIV one of C children was claimed by the pandemic in the 1980s uh 2019 K said he was regretable that the last president Robert mugabi

Was malingered and subjected to mads sliding by some of the sections of the world who were against his Crusade of bringing social justice and Equity to Zambia Zimbabwe so his personal life Kaa married Betty B in 1946 with whom he had eight children she died on 19th September

20120 2012 aged 83 while visiting one of their daughters in Ari Zimbabwe since K was known to wear a safari suit um the Safari suit is still commonly known as the kaunda suit through subsaharan Africa he also wrote music about independence he hoped to achieve

Though one one of the song he has he had he has been known to many zambians is the tiimo like l meaning let’s walk together together with one heart on June 14th 2021 kundo was admitted to Min Soo Military Hospital in laka to be treated for undis disclosed medical condition the zabian government

Uh old Medics um described the disease describ and describ the condition but didn’t give more details the zian government said Medics were also doing everything they could uh to make him recover though it was not clear what his health condition was on 15th June 2021 it was revealed that he was

Being treated for uh okay he was being treated which according to the doctors he been recurring problem in his health 17th June 2021 it was confirmed that he died at the age of 97 after short illness at Mino Soo military hospital he was survived by 30 grandchildren 11 great

Grandchildren K attributed his longivity to a strict lacto veterian diet committed and I don’t take meat no eggs no chicken I only eat vegetables like an elephant he also avoided alcohol and gave up drinking tea in 1953 president Edgar lungu announced on his Facebook page that Zambia will observe a

21 year 21 days of national morning and on the 21st June vice president inongo Winer announced that kund remains will be taken to the funeral position around the country’s provinces with church services in each province capit prior to the state funeral at the national hero stadium in laka several other nations also announc

Periods of straight morning this Z Zimbabwe declared 14 days of morning South Africa declared 10 days of morning bosana Malawi Tanzania all declared 7 Days of morning Moz declared 6 days of morning southern Sudan uh Cuba you know Singapore and other countries declared very many days of morning so that is uh k

Um I was in Z Zambia um I saw his grave they gave me the the history and I’m going to be sharing some of the history um of a KK uh that I got from the man that uh took us around around his grave some of the owners he got

Um he got the Grand Cross of the order of Prince Harry uh in 1975 Supreme companion of atabo South Africa command of the most contous order of Le honorary member of the order of Jamaica uh order of Yugoslavia great state K was also the recipient of the 2007 ubut award received a honorary
