The nationwide National Resistance Movement (NRM) register update exercise has kicked off with an impressive show of participation from party members, who have diligently engaged in verifying their membership status in the iconic yellow books within their local villages and branches.
Rt. Hon. Namayanja Rose Nsereko, the Deputy Secretary General of the party, has lauded the smooth commencement of the process, reporting seamless progress throughout the first day. Namayanja took a hands-on approach, personally visiting registration points across Kampala and Wakiso districts, actively assisting in member registrations in some branches.
Highlighting the significance of member involvement in the exercise, Namayanja stressed that only registered members would be entitled to cast their votes in the upcoming structure and primary elections preceding the highly anticipated 2026 general elections.
After completion of the update exercise, Namayanja revealed that the register would undergo printing and subsequent presentation to the people for scrutiny before finalizing at the national level. She emphasized the party’s dedication to eliminating any potential hurdles associated with holding primaries, assuring members that mechanisms are in place to promptly address concerns raised during the process. Namayanja clarified that registration is limited to those physically present to ensure accurate record-keeping in the yellow book throughout the registration period.
Expressing contentment with the smooth progress of the exercise, Namayanja assured members of the party’s commitment to possessing a legitimate, certified register in accordance with the party’s outlined roadmap. She also acknowledged the deployment of teams nationwide to oversee the seamless progress of the exercise, with no significant issues reported thus far.
Hon. Amb. Nekesa Barbara Oundo, the NRM National Treasurer, echoed the sentiment of the importance of the ongoing process. Updating her membership status in Busia district, Hon. Oundo emphasized the critical role of the register, stating, “We will use the same register for our structure elections shortly.”
Appealing to members to ensure the accuracy of their details, Hon. Oundo stressed alignment with records from the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
“I urge everyone to utilize these five days to crosscheck their details in the NRM membership register,” she urged. “Remember, this is not a voter’s register but a register for party faithful aged 16 and above. Let’s approach this as a collective responsibility, with everyone playing a vigilant role.”
The registration exercise is set to continue until Sunday, March 17, 2024, with a strong emphasis on ensuring the integrity and accuracy of the NRM membership register as the party gears up for future electoral processes.
