Rwampara district authorities are currently probing the origins of a blaze that ravaged two boys’ dormitories at Rwenyaga Secondary School in Mwizi Sub County. The incident, which occurred on the evening of April 14, 2024, coincided with a football match between Arsenal and Aston Villa, drawing most students to the school’s main hall.

Kasasira Samson, the police spokesperson for the Rwizi region, disclosed to Kigezi TV that the fire erupted in the Felix block, home to the Peace and Rich dormitories accommodating 48 and 32 students, respectively. Prompt action by a senior six student, who noticed the fire while studying in a nearby classroom, led to the swift response of teachers who disconnected the electricity supply.

Despite efforts to contain the blaze using water and soil, the Peace dormitory sustained significant damage, resulting in the loss of property, including the structure’s roof. Thankfully, no casualties were reported among the students.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire originated in the Peace dormitory, possibly triggered by a charcoal flat iron left unattended on a bed as students hurried to catch the football match. Authorities continue to delve into the incident to ascertain the precise cause of the outbreak.
