Nairobi, Kenya (OBSERVER) – President William Ruto has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with Somalia, marking the second time in less than two months that he has hosted Somali President Hassan Mohamud in Nairobi.

Following a meeting at State House, Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized the positive outcomes of the collaboration between the two nations. “Our collaboration with the government of the Republic of Somalia is bearing fruit. The region is witnessing greater peace and stability. We commit to grow this relationship,” he stated.

Saturday’s meeting focused on regional peace, security, and potential areas for trade and investment collaboration. In their previous meeting in April, Ruto and Mohamud discussed joint efforts to combat terrorism and enhance security in the region.

Both Kenya and Somalia face significant threats from the al Shabaab terrorist group, which has conducted numerous attacks in both countries with devastating consequences.

President Ruto has been a vocal advocate for regional peace, leading Kenya’s efforts to mediate conflicts in Eastern Africa. Kenya was elected as Chair of the IGAD quartet to address issues in Sudan on June 12, 2023, in Djibouti. The quartet includes Sudan, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.

Additionally, Kenya has been instrumental in resolving the conflict in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo through the Nairobi peace process, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
