Mugerwa Paul Jailed 40 Years for Murder of Lira Doctor Olila
Lira– The High Court has sentenced Mugerwa Paul to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the murder of Dr. Olila Wilfred, a case that sent shockwaves across the Lango sub-region.

Appearing before the High Court, presided over by Hon. Lady Justice Sarah Birungi Kalibala, Mugerwa admitted to the offence of murder. The court handed him a 40-year custodial sentence. He was also sentenced to an additional 20 years for aggravated robbery.
Court heard that in January 2025, Mugerwa—an employee of a health insurance company based in Mbale—meticulously planned and executed the kidnapping of Dr. Olila from Lira Hotel. He later killed him and dumped the body in Kalaki District in a crime described as both calculated and disturbing.
Dr. Olila, a retired medical doctor, was widely respected in the Lira community. He owned and operated New Moroto Nursing Home, where he specialized in ear, nose, and throat (ENT) care. His brutal killing left the community in grief and disbelief.
The prosecution, led by Chief State Attorney and Lira Regional Officer Jonathan Okello, successfully secured the conviction.
The judgment underscores the judiciary’s commitment to protecting human life and ensuring justice for victims, sending a strong warning against violent crime.
