Under the theme “Faith, Unity and Excellence through Sports,” the 2026 Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) Solidarity Games girls’ football competition kicked off in thrilling fashion at Nkoma Secondary School in Mbale, with Masaka Secondary School setting the early pace on day one.
Masaka SS delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Kakungulu Memorial in the opening fixture, announcing their intent in the tournament with a dominant display.
Shakirah Nantumbwe broke the deadlock in the first half, giving Masaka a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break. The forward proved a constant threat throughout the game, dazzling spectators with her pace, dribbling ability, and eye for goal.
Early in the second half, Namugenyi Atwiyah doubled Masaka’s advantage before sealing her brace with a third goal just four minutes to full time, putting the result beyond doubt.
Nantumbwe remained the standout performer of the encounter, repeatedly troubling the Kakungulu defense and goalkeeper, forcing multiple saves and even rattling the woodwork in a lively attacking display.
In the day’s other fixture, defending champions Kawempe Muslim Secondary School began their title defense on a strong note with a 3-0 win over Kinaawa High School.
Mildred Nambalirwa was the star for Kawempe, scoring a brace, while Patricia Namugenyi added the third goal. Nambalirwa opened the scoring in the first half to give Kawempe a slim 1-0 lead at halftime.
She returned in the second half to net her second 15 minutes after the restart, before Namugenyi sealed the victory ten minutes later, ensuring a comfortable start for the reigning champions.
Kawempe Muslim SS have been dominant in the competition, winning every edition since 2016 when Masaka SS last lifted the trophy — setting up an exciting storyline as Masaka looks to reclaim past glory.
The tournament, which started today, will climax on Monday, April 6, at Mbale City Stadium.
In the previous edition held in Kayunga, Masaka SS finished fourth after narrowly losing 7-6 on penalties to Kawempe Muslim SS side B following a goalless draw in normal time.
