Kampala– The Uganda Human Rights Commission has congratulated President Yoweri Museveni upon his swearing-in for a fresh term in office, while urging continued commitment to human rights, justice, accountability and inclusive economic empowerment.

In a statement dated May 11, 2026, UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya said “This moment is both significant and symbolic. It reflects the will of the people, and it renews a solemn constitutional covenant, between leadership and citizens, anchored in the protection and promotion of human rights.”
Wangadya also noted that Uganda has made important strides in strengthening legal and institutional frameworks for the protection of human rights, adding that institutions of accountability remain strong and public awareness of rights continues to grow.
She, however, emphasized that the true measure of progress lies in the daily experiences of citizens and the extent to which their rights are protected and respected in ordinary life.
The commission also highlighted wealth creation and economic empowerment as essential components of human rights, saying access to productive opportunities enables citizens to participate meaningfully in national development.
UHRC called for wealth creation initiatives that are inclusive, transparent and accessible, especially for youth, women and marginalized communities, arguing that such policies promote equality, stability and national cohesion.
The commission further reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at strengthening Uganda’s human rights landscape and promoting governance that is citizen-centred, rules-based and anchored in accountability.
Wangadya concluded by expressing hope that the new presidential term will not only represent continuity in leadership, but also deepen commitment to the rights, dignity and economic empowerment of all Ugandans.
