A staggering 82 goals lit up the opening day of the 2026 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association U-20 National Boys Football Championship as schools from across the country produced thrilling performances in an explosive start to the tournament in Lira.
The championship immediately delivered drama, goals and surprises, with several traditional giants making strong statements while emerging schools announced their arrival on the national stage.
Hosts Lira Town College endured a disappointing opening after falling 3-1 to NUMASA Secondary School in one of the standout matches of Matchday One.
Hassan Wasswa, Moris Segguya and Fahad Bukenya all found the back of the net for NUMASA to silence the home crowd and hand the hosts an early setback in Group I.
Defending champions Buddo Secondary School began their title defence on a positive note with a composed 2-0 victory over Teso College Aloet. Aaron Okello and Hillary Tumusiime scored the goals that ensured the Wakiso-based giants opened their campaign in style.
However, the biggest talking point of the day was the avalanche of goals witnessed across various venues in Lira.
Agape High School produced one of the most dominant performances after thrashing Makobore High School 6-1, while Masindi Secondary School entertained fans in a high-scoring 6-2 victory over Kaserem Secondary School.
Greenlight Islamic School also emerged among the early favourites following a commanding 5-1 triumph against Dr. Obote College.
Tournament debutants Bukedea Comprehensive School South impressed with a clinical 4-1 victory over PP Newton Secondary School, while Ssingo Secondary School cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win against Bishop Comboni College.
Elsewhere, several schools had to grind for narrow victories. Kichwamba High School edged Bwera Secondary School 1-0 thanks to Robert Nkasiima’s decisive strike, while Kyadondo Secondary School claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kigumba Intensive Secondary School.
Masaka Secondary School also secured a narrow 2-1 win over Lumino High School in another entertaining encounter.
The tournament’s first goalless draw came between Madinah Islamic Secondary School and Kitgum Standard High School.
There was also disappointment after the fixture involving Lotuke Seed Secondary School and Mbarara Army Boarding Secondary School failed to take place following Lotuke Seed’s failure to report for the championship, resulting in a walkover.
With 64 schools participating and matches spread across different venues in Lira, fans turned up in large numbers to witness one of the most entertaining opening days in recent tournament history.
After the Matchday One fireworks, schools such as Buddo SS, Agape HS, Bukedea Comprehensive, Greenlight Islamic and Jinja Comprehensive have already emerged as early contenders as the race for national glory gathers momentum.
